PICTURED ABOVE: The Great Mosque of Djenne. Constructed more than 1,500 years ago, the building consists entirely of un-stabilized rammed earth walls. The local people hold an annual festival to celebrate the building and to apply a protective mud coating. The wood poles extending from the building are not structural, but are used as a permanent scaffolding system during the re coating of the walls.
